Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
