Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such medications need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
